If a person starts showing symptoms of rabies, the infection is always fatal. In Arizona, an average of 30 people are exposed each year to an animal who has rabies, but ing to the Arizona Department of Health Services, the last reported human death from the disease in the state dates back to 1981.

Once a person develops rabies symptoms it is too late for treatment!

Demographic and epidemiological risk factors The age group of 5 to 14 years was the most exposed (43.2%; 95% CI, 38.2–48.3). A greater number of human rabies exposures was registered in males (63%; 95% CI, 58.0–67.8) than females (37%; 95% CI, 32.1–42.0).

There is no time limit regarding the administration of PEP after an exposure. In this case it is still appropriate to initiate PEP. Administration of both human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and four doses of rabies vaccine is recommended regardless of the time elapsed since the exposure.

Immunization and treatment for possible rabies are recommended for at least up to 14 days after exposure or a bite.

The first shot is given immediately after exposure to a rabid animal, then again three days later, seven days later, and 14 days later. The person should also receive another shot called rabies immune globulin (RIG).

The first dose of the four-dose course should be administered as soon as possible after exposure. Additional doses should be administered on days 3, 7, and 14 after the first vaccination.

The last documented human case of rabies in Arizona was in 1981 – this case was bitten by a rabid dog in Mexico. Currently in Arizona, the principal rabies hosts are bats, skunks, and foxes. Recent epidemiologic data suggest that transmission of rabies virus can occur from minor or unrecognized bites from bats.
