TAPAS was developed under the Army's Small Business Innovation Research grant programme and can measure up to 26 personality dimensions. The 120-question, non-cognitive personality test has actually been administered to US Army and US Air Force recruits, in conjunction with other entrance exams, since 2009.

TAPAS is a computer-adaptive non-cognitive assessment (survey) that military applicants take. It measures 12 dimensions of personality including such things as Achievement, Non-delinquency, Even-temperedness, Intellectual Efficiency, Optimism, Physical Conditioning and Attention Seeking.

The Air Force TAPAS test consists of 80 multiple-choice questions that must be answered within a 60-minute time limit.

To pass the TAPAS test, you will need to score 80% or higher on both the written and oral exams. The term “tapas” is derived from the acronym for Tailored adaptive personality assessment system. An assessment, rather than a test, is used by the U.S. military to measure personality traits.

The TAPAS is a different type of "test" because there are no right or wrong answers. It uses straight-forward statements and a set of "forced choice" responses. It is computer- based and adaptive in the sense that each response determines which two statements will be paired together next.
