Johne's Disease is a slow, contagious disease that is typically fatal to cattle, but there are ways beef producers can keep it out of herds. The bacteria, Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), primarily affect the small intestine, creating a thickened and inflamed intestinal wall.

The Johne's organism can live for up to 18 months in soil or manure, depending on environmental conditions. The bacteria also can be found in the semen of infected bulls. Transmission of Johne's via natural service theoretically is possible but has not been proven.

There is no cure for Johne's disease, and there is not an approved vaccine for goats in the United States to help protect them from infection. Therefore, prevention is the key to control.

Good management and hygiene of maternity areas, calves and heifers, and clean feed and water are basic for Johne's control but also prevent spread of other bacteria, viruses, and intestinal parasites spread by fecal shedding.

Animals at this stage of the disease will not live very long—perhaps a few weeks at most. Signs are rarely evident until 2 or more years after the initial infection, which usually occurs shortly after birth.

Deer or elk with clinical signs of Johne's disease (diarrhea and weight loss) are only a small fraction of the infected cervids in a herd. The infection has the ability to silently spread from adults to fawns or kids long before signs of illness in infected animals are evident.

The mode of transmission is unclear; however, some evidence suggests that humans may become infected via contaminated milk.

The mortality rate is about 1%, but up to 50% of the animals in the herd can be asymptomatically infected, resulting in losses in production. Once the symptoms appear, paratuberculosis is progressive and affected animals eventually die. The percentage of asymptomatic carriers that develop overt disease is unknown.
