Scouts are organized into troops averaging 20–30 Scouts under the guidance of one or more Scout Leaders or Scoutmasters. Troops subdivide into patrols of about 6–8 Scouts and engage in outdoor and special interest activities.

On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Troops vary widely in size, from less than 10 members, to as many as 100 or so. Troops are made of Patrols, which are tight-knit team of five to eight members. The uniformed adult leader of a Scouts BSA Troop is called a Scoutmaster. Patrols are led by Scouts who are elected by the members of the Patrol.

World Scout Membership. There are more than 31 million Scouts, youth and adults, boys and girls, in 216 countries and territories.

A Scout patrol is a small team of normally six to eight members where Scouts learn skills together, share responsibilities and take on leadership roles.

From the BSA's registration guidebook: “Individuals who are registered with the BSA may multiple register in another BSA unit … by completing a new BSA youth application.” This is especially convenient in a situation in which a youth might be splitting time in two different households far away from each other.

Scouts BSA has seven ranks: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. Requirements are found in the Scouts BSA Handbook and online. Advancement has four steps: Learn, Test, Review and Recognize.

The BSA says that the average Boy Scout troop size is 14 scouts. Lord Baden-Powell is attributed with stating the optimum troop size to be around 32 scouts.
