Under the law, a mandated reporter's failure to report suspected instances of child abuse or neglect to IDCFS constitutes a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a term of imprisonment for up to one year, or by a fine not to exceed $1,000, or both, and a second or subsequent violation is a Class 4 felony.

DCFS must complete its investigation within 60 days. They will find that the allegations were either: Indicated—meaning that DFCS found some evidence of abuse or neglect against the parent or caretaker of the child; or. Unfounded—meaning that DCFS did not find credible evidence of abuse or neglect.

In non-emergency situations, suspected child abuse or neglect can be reported using the Online Reporting System https://dcfsonlinereporting.dcfs.illinois.gov/. Provide as much information as possible to help DCFS identify or locate the child.

State law protects the confidentiality of all reporters, and your name is never disclosed. You may still choose to make a report anonymously, but the inability of investigators to follow-up with you to obtain additional information may impede our investigation and the child's safety.

If you believe the abuse or neglect you are reporting requires immediate action, you MUST call the Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 800-25-ABUSE (800-252-2873) to make your report.

In Illinois, neglect is defined as the failure of a parent or caretaker to meet “minimal parenting” standards for providing adequate supervision, food, clothing, medical care, shelter or other basic needs (Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, 2017).

What is cants 5 form? Candidates who suspect possible abuse and/or neglect of a child must complete the form “CANTS 5: Written. Confirmation of Child Abuse/Neglect Report: Mandated Reporters.” This form is available on the DCFS Web site, http://.state.il.us/dcfs/index.shtml.
