Where did the Yurok language come from?

Yurok (also Chillula, Mita, Pekwan, Rikwa, Sugon, Weitspek, and Weitspekan) is an Algic language. It is the traditional language of the Yurok of Del Norte County and Humboldt County on the northwest coast of California. The name Yurok comes from the Karuk 'yuruk', literally meaning 'downriver'.

Traditional Yurok religion was concerned with an individual's effort to elicit supernatural aid, especially through ritual cleanliness, and with rituals for the public welfare. The tribe did not practice the potlatch, masked dances, representative carving, and other features typical of their Northwest Coast neighbours.

The Yurok Tribe is currently the largest group of Native Americans in the state of California, with 6357 enrolled members living in or around the reservation.

The Yurok used nets as well as harpoons for fishing. Nets were made of string rolled from fibers of a leaf. The salmon harpoon had a slender shaft over 20 feet long, with barbs of bone or horn. The Yurok used deerskins to make clothes.

The Yurok built rectangular houses using wood from redwood trees. They hunted, fished, and gathered nuts, berries, and other wild plant foods. Their most important foods were salmon and acorns. The Yurok wove baskets and made dugout canoes from redwoods.

Name. Yurok (pronounced YOOR-ock) comes from the word yuruk, meaning “downriver” in the Karok language. The Yurok sometimes called themselves Olekwo'l (“the people”) or Pulikla (“downriver”), but they usually used village or clan names rather than a general tribal name.

The Yurok Tribe is the largest federally recognized Indian tribe in California and has a reservation that straddles the majestic Klamath River, extending for one mile on each side of the river, from its entry into the Pacific Ocean to approximately 45 miles upriver to the confluence with the Trinity River.

Culturally, our people are known as great fishermen, eelers, basket weavers, canoe makers, storytellers, singers, dancers, healers and strong medicine people.
