Calculate the suction pressure at churn (no flow) and the flow demand of the fire protection system by taking the residual pressure at the water supply and subtracting the friction loss between the water supply and the pump.

For example, NFPA 25 addresses the “operating condition” of fire protection systems and specifically states that it “does not require the inspector to verify the adequacy of the design of the system.”2 NFPA 72 however, has no such directive and does not restrict inspections and tests to verifying the operating ...

The requirements for ITM of fire pumps are found in NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.

The monthly churn test requires electric powered pumps to be tested as follows: Run pump for a minimum of 10 minutes. Record the system suction & discharge pressure gauge readings. Check the pump packing glands for slight discharge. Adjust glands nuts; if neccessary. Check for unusual noise or vibration.

Fire pump churn tests – no flow tests – are often not fully understood. First of all, diesel driven pumps should be churn tested for at least 30 min. on a weekly basis. Electrically driven pumps should be churn tested for at least 10 min.

(Note that pressure selection is dependent on the water supply and does not impact the flow issues discussed in this column.) During the acceptance test, NFPA 20 requires several flow demands to be tested: no-flow (also called churn or shut-off), 100 percent and 150 percent of the rated capacity.

NFPA 20 protects life and property by providing requirements for the selection and installation of pumps to ensure that systems will work as intended to deliver adequate and reliable water supplies in a fire emergency.

NFPA 20 has permitted the use of a flow meter as a water flow test device for quite some time. Where installed, NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, requires that the flow meter be tested and recalibrated every three years.
