Recruits may request to retake the OPAT if they fail. Multiple unsuccessful attempts may result in a MOS renegotiation and subsequent category downgrade, such as Gray to Gold.

Seventy percent of people pass the OPAT on the first try, and just about everybody else passes after a few attempts. In 2017, out of more than 69,900 regular Army recruits, only 11 did not achieve the minimum level and chose to be discharged.

Scores are categorized at three levels from highest to lowest: heavy (black), significant (gray) and moderate (gold). To receive a qualifying score at each category level, individuals must follow proper testing protocols and meet required distances and/or quantities for each test event.

Passing OPAT scores are associated with the moderate physical demand category. The minimum passing score for the moderate physical demand category are: LJ – 0120 CM, PT – 0350 CM, SD – 0120 LBS, and IR – 0036 shuttles. Testing will require you to coordinate with a local recruiter who will administer the OPAT.

To attain gold on the OPAT, the recruit or Soldier would need to achieve a minimum of 3 feet, 11 inches in the standing long jump; 11 feet, 6 inches for the seated power throw; 120 pounds for the strength deadlift; and a 10:27 minute mile over the course of 36 shuttles.

The OPAT test events are: the standing long jump, seated power throw, strength deadlift and the interval aerobic run. The standing long jump, seated power throw and strength deadlift can be performed in any order; however the interval aerobic run must be performed as the last event.
