TBI can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe, typically based on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score and/or neurobehavioral deficits after the injury.

The Ohio State University Traumatic Brain Injury Identification Method (OSU TBI-ID) is a standardized procedure for eliciting a person's lifetime history of TBI through a 3-5 minute structured interview. The OSU TBI-ID is recommended for use by all health care and social service professionals.
