Parents must complete the PI-1206 form every school year. Need to change your information? The Department of Public Instruction does not provide personal consultation and technical assistance regarding home-based private educational programs. Please review our Frequently Asked Questions for additional information.

To homeschool in Wisconsin parents must file a form of intent with the Department of Public Instruction and then meet two major requirements each year: Provide 875 hours of instruction each school year. Provide a sequentially-based method of instruction where children build on previous knowledge.

Wisconsin has one of the most reasonable homeschooling laws. Because parents are required to file the PI-1206 Homeschool Report with the DPI and affirm that they are complying with the law, the law holds parents accountable.

Provide the required period of instruction Your homeschool program must provide at least 875 hours of instruction each school year (July 1 to June 30). Keep track of your hours well enough that you could document 875 hours of instruction per year.

Homeschooling your child is a private choice (much like private school) and is not employment. Therefore, parents do not get paid to homeschool their children. However, in some states families may receive a tax credit, deduction, or even a stipend if homeschooling under an umbrella school (like a charter school).

How long does it take to start homeschooling? You can start your homeschool year in 1–2 months with proper planning. With a bit of determination and decisiveness, it's possible to start your first homeschool year in one week—the time it takes for textbooks to ship to your house.

Students must complete a minimum of 22 credits of coursework in English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Civics, Physical Education and Electives. Some districts require community service experience.

It's a community of self-directed learners, and a great place for unschoolers to make deep, lasting friendships. If you want your child to be a free learner in Wisconsin, with access to a supportive and caring community of peers and adults, a virtual private school may be your best bet.
