The TAAS, or Texas Assessment of Academic Skills, was the third standardized test used in Texas between 1991 and 2002, when it was replaced by the TAKS test from 2003 to 2013.

The scale score takes into account the difficulty level of the specific set of questions based on the test. It quantifies a student's performance relative to the passing standards or proficiency levels.

The written composition is graded on a scale of 0–4. Students must earn a score of 2 or better on their written composition in order to meet the standard in writing or ELA. The open-ended items (short answer) are graded on a scale of 0–3.

The TAAS reading, writing, and mathematics tests were administered in the fall to students in grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Spanish versions of the grade 3 tests were administered to eligible English language learners (ELLs).

The scale score ranges from approximately 400 to 2400, with a minimum expectations score of 1500. The score of 1500 accounts for differences in difficulty in the test form used for each administration.

The students need a minimum of 25% to 35% in order to pass the tests.
