Water below the water table where water is found between particles of soil and between rocks is called groundwater.

Groundwater is the water present below the earth's surface and is a vast resource of water. Almost 22 percent of water is below the surface land in the form of groundwater. Groundwater is important as it is used for water supply in rural and urban areas.

West Bengal has a very good groundwater potential. The reason of such affluence is due to her geographical location, high rainfall, and geological setting.

Groundwater refers to all the water occupying the voids, pores and fissures within geological formations, which originated from atmospheric precipitation either directly by rainfall infiltration or indirectly from rivers, lakes or canals.

Recharge occurs when surface water, either from direct precipitation or from rivers and lakes, percolates downwards through the microscopic spaces in the soil and rock profile. Eventually, the infiltrated water may make its way into an underground water-bearing rock formation, known as an aquifer.
