Three factors determine the severity of an arc flash injury: proximity of the worker to the hazard, temperature, and the time it takes for the circuit to break. Because of the violent nature of an arc flash exposure, employee injuries can be very serious.

Each must be calculated separately as the available fault current varies based on the circuit impedance. The circuit impedance is unique at every point in the system. For example, circuit impedance is affected by factors such as the type and length of the wiring, as well as the other equipment that is in the circuit.

The current that flows through an arcing fault is usually significantly less than the bolted fault current, due to greater resistance. Arc fault current calculations are based on voltage, bolted fault current, conductor gap distance, and other factors.

What determines the intensity of an arc-flash? Three key facts determine the intensity of an arc-flash on the surroundings. These factors are the quantity of fault current available in a system, the time until an arc-flash is cleared, and the distance an individual is from a fault arc.

By definition, a bolted fault has no fault impedance while the arcing fault current has impedance associated with the arc. The bolted fault, therefore, has higher fault current magnitude than the arcing fault.

The injuries that can result from an arc flash are burns, respiratory system damage, penetration of the skin by flying debris, hearing loss, and internal injuries caused by force from the blast pressure.

Although many variables need to be considered when performing incident-energy calculations, two important ones include the arcing short-circuit current (discussed in part 2 of this series) and the arcing time, which defines the duration of the arc flash.

Factors Affecting Arc Resistance Length of the Arc: The arc resistance increases with the size of the arc. i.e., the length of separation between the contacts. Cross-section of the Arc: The arc resistance increases with the decrease in the area of the arc's cross-section.
