An educational program in which two languages are used to provide content matter instruction. Over time, the use of the native language is decreased and the use of English is increased until only English is used.

Some potential benefits of transitional bilingual education can include: Students do not have to abandon their native language in the educational environment. Preservation of cultural identity is often possible. Students continue to focus on other academic subjects while learning English.

Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) programs offer students of the same home language the opportunity to learn to speak, understand, read, and write in English while continuing to learn academic content in their home language.

Transitional bilingual education is an approach to bilingual education where the children first acquires fluency in their native language before acquiring fluency in the second language, where fluency is defined as linguistic fluency (such as speaking) as well as literacy (such as reading and writing).

As the name implies, a transitional bilingual education program focuses on transitioning students from their native language into English using components of the native language and support systems (Slavin & Cheung, 2005).

Transitional bilingualism is the shift from being bilingual, knowing two different languages, to only speaking one leading language. This usually happens over a period of time and can be seen within a few generations.

The first and most obvious difference between the programs is their length. Early-exit programs last up to four years while late-exit programs are up to seven years long. Early-exit programs maintain first language instruction only for two years; late-exit programs use first language heavily for at least four years.
