Last Modified: Jun 2, 2020. The NPIP is a voluntary State–Federal cooperative testing and certification program for poultry breeding flocks, baby chicks, poults, hatching eggs, hatcheries, and dealers.

The NPIP, or National Poultry Improvement Plan, is a voluntary program overseen by the USDA that monitors flocks and hatcheries. At the basic level, a chicken hatchery with an NPIP certification has been tested and found to be clean of Salmonella, Mycoplasma and low-path Avian Influenza diseases.

The National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) is a national voluntary cooperative federal/state/industry program that uses disease control and prevention strategies to improve the poultry and poultry products produced by participants.

Your entire adult flock will be tested for Pullorum Typhoid. The cost for this testing is ten cents per bird. Thirty birds (or your entire adult flock, if thirty birds or fewer) will be tested for Avian Influenza. There is no charge for this testing.

Remit a $25.00 flock fee with each annual application and test (if test is required).

The NPIP is technically a voluntary program, however, if you want to sell, move or show your chickens legally, you must be NPIP clean. If you are a casual backyard chicken keeper with a confined flock as your own pets/egg producers, NPIP certification isn't something you necessarily need to concern yourself with.

National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) Avian Influenza (AI)

To qualify, up to 300 birds in your flock over four months of age must test negative to a pullorum- typhoid blood test. In addition, your facility needs to pass an inspection on the day of the test. A completed NPIP application must be sent in every year prior to each flock test and inspection.
