Placing corn, pellets, minerals, salt or other materials to attract deer to shoot is considered baiting and is illegal. It is also illegal to feed deer in Virginia for any reason from September 1 though the first Saturday in January.

Hunters are reminded that it is unlawful to hunt on private property without the permission of the landowner, and hunters must have the permission of the landowner to track or retrieve wounded game on private property.

Written permission is required from the property owner to hunt or trap on private property in all counties.

And during hunting season it is called baiting which is considered not only bad in a sporting sense, but also when considering game management and the health of the deer herd. But if the deer food ingested is grown on the land, then it is generally considered a food plot and not baiting.
