The M60 in Vietnam Pittman wasn't the only service member to rely on the M60 during the Vietnam War. First issued in 1959, the belt-fed medium machine gun was eventually mounted on virtually every type of vehicle in the US military's arsenal — helicopters, tanks, trucks, and even boats.

Introduced at the end of the 1950s, the M60 was a belt-fed light machine gun that fired a 7.62 mm round. The M60's operation was usually a team effort: while one solider carried the weapon, and one solider could operate as an assistant gunner, most other men in a rifle squad could carry ammunition for the M60.

Although, at the time, the M60 was slowly replacing it. Vietnam would be the last war American forces would use the M1919 in. However, to this day, variants of the M1919 actually still see service around the world, especially with nations that have a limited defense budget.

Its design is similar to Browning's earlier M1919 Browning machine gun, which was chambered for the . 30-06 cartridge. The M2 uses the much larger and much more powerful . 50 BMG cartridge, which was developed alongside and takes its name from the gun itself (BMG standing for Browning Machine Gun).

The M1919 Browning is a . 30 caliber medium machine gun that was widely used during the 20th century, especially during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

The 1917 was a sustained fire machine gun in the tradition of the Maxim and the Vickers, while the 1919 was a more mobile, lighter version.

Though not a perfect weapon, the M1919 was still a very solid one. It was phased out of U.S. service in the 1950s, but is still in use in several military forces around the world.
