Discovered in 2008, Koobface became one of the most prolific internet worms in 2009. It went dormant for years, then reemerged in 2013 with nearly twice the infections in the first quarter than were reported in all of 2009 — and it's still out there.

Beginning in July 2008, the Koobface gang aimed at Web users with invitations to watch a funny or sexy video. Those curious enough to click the link got a message to update their computer's Flash software, which begins the download of the Koobface malware.

That was the Koobface virus at work targeting Facebook users, and it hasn't been officially eradicated either; in fact, it's still nagging people in 2023.

Discovered in 2008, Koobface became one of the most prolific internet worms in 2009.

The Koobface virus first emerged in 2008, spreading in the form of messages with subject lines such as "You look just awesome in this new movie." Users who clicked on the message were informed their Flash player was out of date and were prompted to download Flash software, exposing their computer to Koobface malware.

Facebook finally revealed the names of the suspects behind the worm on January 17, 2012. They include Stanislav Avdeyko (leDed), Alexander Koltyshev (Floppy), Anton Korotchenko (KrotReal), Roman P. Koturbach (PoMuc), Svyatoslav E. Polichuck (PsViat and PsycoMan).
