Liposomes were discovered by Alec D Bangham in the 1960s at the Babraham Institute, University of Cambridge, and consist of single or multiple concentric lipid bilayers encapsulating an aqueous compartment (Figure 1).

A range of membrane models have been developed to study components of cellular systems. Lipid vesicles or liposomes are one such artificial membrane model which mimics many properties of the biological system: they are lipid bilayers composed of one or more lipids to which other molecules can associate.

A liposome is a closed, spherical lipid bilayer, which forms an internal cavity capable of carrying aqueous solutions. A lipid bilayer is composed of two sheets of tightly arranged phospholipids. These molecules have a hydrophobic tail and a hydrophilic head region.

Liposomes are supramolecular assemblies of lipids, which self-associate to enclose an aqueous compartment surrounded by a lipid bilayer membrane. Several approaches have been developed for liposome formation.

Liposomes are small artificial vesicles of spherical shape that can be created from cholesterol and natural non-toxic phospholipids. Due to their size and hydrophobic and hydrophilic character(besides biocompatibility), liposomes are promising systems for drug delivery.

Liposomes are extensively used as carriers for active molecules in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries as well as in food and farm industries, where liposomes encapsulation has also been studied to entrap unstable substances such as antioxidants, flavors, and antimicrobials.
