CLC/TC 64 is the technical committee responsible for HD 60364, which is the European standard for Electrical installations and protection against electric shock. This is essentially the European version of BS 7671.

Out of scope for BS7671 The circuit voltage is greater than 1,000 VAC, or 1,500 VDC. The installation is related to machines (aircraft, boats, vehicles, trains, industrial equipment, lifts) Mines and quarries. Distribution of electricity, lightning conductors, electric fences.

The result is BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 - a modern standard that improves fire and end-user safety and increases sustainability. The previous version of this standard - BS 7671:2018+A1:2020 - is being withdrawn on 27 September 2022. All electrical installations must comply with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 from 28 September 2022.

This standard lays out the requirement for installation of fixed cabling within a building to ensure the adherence of safety and proper practice. It also covers the testing of wiring.

To protect against electric shock and/or thermal effects, BS 7671 requires every electrical connection in a live conductor to be enclosed in a suitable accessory or equipment enclosure, or in an enclosure partially formed or completed with non-combustible building material.

The seven parts are; Part 1 – Scope, Object and Fundamental Principles. Part 2 – Definitions. Part 3 – Assessment of General Characteristics. Part 4 – Protection for Safety. Part 5 – Selection and of Equipment. Part 6 – Inspection and Testing. Part 7 – Special Installations or Locations.

In general, BS 7671 applies to circuits supplied at nominal voltages (Uo) up to and including 1000 volts AC or 1500 volts DC. The standard therefore covers the Extra Low Voltage (ELV) range (0-50V AC, 0-125V DC), and the Low Voltage (LV) range (50-1000V AC, 125-1500V DC).

Therefore, to support the user, the specific meaning of a range of terms used within BS 7671 is provided in Chapter 2 of BS 7671, 'Definitions'; that is, when a definition is given in BS 7671 it has that meaning and no other.
