Since the mileage of a vehicle is not only stored in the odometer but also in its engine control units, we can learn the car's real mileage and detect odometer discrepancies. This is regardless of whether the car has a digital odometer or a mechanical odometer.

When a car is sold in this scenario, the mileage is marked on the title as “exempt.” This is simply stating that the car has been around too long to reliably verify its mileage.

It means that it's exempt from federal odometer disclosure laws so no one has to legally guarantee them to be accurate due to the age and or class of vehicle, Over 10 years old is exempt.

In the state of Texas once a vehicle is over 10 years old, the mileage becomes exempt on the title. If you purchase a vehicle and the word EXEMPT appears in the top right hand corner of the title, you know that the vehicle in question has been bought/sold at least once.

Section 501.072 requires the transferor of a motor vehicle transferred in this state to provide to the transferee a disclosure of the vehicle's odometer reading at the time of the transfer in compliance with 49 U.S.C.

The federal Truth in Mileage Act (TIMA) requires motor vehicle sellers provide an odometer disclosure statement at the time of sale or transfer of ownership. This is one of the many forms a car buyer signs when buying a vehicle; it is the seller stating clearly how many miles are on the vehicle and the buyer agreeing.

Exempt from Odometer Disclosure. The vehicle falls within criteria that allow it to change ownership without disclosure of the odometer reading. Exempt. Exceeds Mechanical Limits. The odometer reading is less than the true mileage of the vehicle because the odometer cannot display the total number of true miles.
