If you are just writing notes to help with your vocabulary, this is what you need to do. Write the new word. Find the meaning of the new word. Write the meaning of the new word. Think of your own sentence.

So, what is a vocabulary notebook? A vocabulary notebook is a small book where you record new words. The best vocabulary notebook is small enough to put in your pocket so you can carry it everywhere, like this. Remembering new vocabulary is something that many language students find difficult.

Each type has a different purpose and, luckily, vocabulary development in one type facilitates growth in another. Listening Vocabulary: Speaking Vocabulary: Reading Vocabulary: Writing Vocabulary:

Vocabulary in English can be categorized into two types, namely- active and passive. The words that we use and understand in day-to-day language are termed as active vocabulary while the ones which we know but use rarely are said to be passive vocabulary.

This handout discusses the three tiers of vocabulary, Tier 1—Basic Vocabulary, Tier 2—High Frequency/Multiple Meaning, and Tier 3—Subject Related. Tier one consists of the most basic words. These words rarely require direct instruction and typically do not have multiple meanings.

Listening vocabulary refers to the words we need to know to understand what we hear. Speaking vocabulary consists of the words we use when we speak. Reading vocabulary refers to the words we need to know to understand what we read. Writing vocabulary consists of the words we use in writing.

When you find the words follow these steps: write the word/phrase and its definition in English. try and use your own words, instead of straight copying from the dictionary. look up the word online to see it in 3-4 contexts. write your own sentence using the word.

Tier three consists of low-frequency words that occur in specific domains. Domains include subjects in school, hobbies, occupations, geographic regions, technology, weather, etc. We usually learn these words when a specific need arises, such as learning amino acid during a chemistry lesson.
