Waste or Wastewater Stabilization Ponds (WSPs) are large, man-made water bodies in which blackwater, greywater or faecal sludge are treated by natural occurring processes and the influence of solar light, wind, microorganisms and algae . The ponds can be used individually, or linked in a series for improved treatment.

Soil must be suitable for pond stability. Surface drainage or storm runoff should be kept out of lagoons, if necessary diversion terraces or drains should be installed above the site. The pond system including inlet and outlet arrangements should be located above the probable maximum flood level M that area.

Temperature, net evap? oration, flow, and BOD are the four most essential design factors for Waste Stabilization Ponds.

Waste Stabilization Ponds (WSPs) are large, man-made water bodies. The ponds can be used individually, or linked in a series for improved treatment. There are three types of ponds, (1) anaerobic, (2) facultative and (3) aerobic (maturation), each with different treatment and design characteristics.

Some of the most important factors influencing pathogen removal efficiency in WSPs include hydraulic retention time and efficiency, water clarity, pond depth, sunlight exposure and penetration, temperature, and pH.

They use less energy than most waste water treatment methods....Disadvantages of WSP system are: Lagoon systems require more land than other treatment methods. They are less efficient in cold climates and may require additional land or longer detention times in these areas.

Temperature, organic load, industrial toxic chemicals, and solar energy levels are the four important environmental factors that influence the pond performance and the design criteria. A universal design coefficient, K(s), is suggested for all unaerated, facultative, waste stabilization ponds.
