The action level for lead is 0.015 mg/L or 15 ppb. The action level for copper is 1.3 mg/L or 1300 ppb. Water treatment generally in the form of chemical addition meant to reduce the corrosivity of the water.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Lead and Copper Rule establishes an action level (AL) of 0.015 mg/L for Lead and 1.3 mg/L for copper. Results are calculated for each community water system and non-transient, non-community water system using the 90th percentile level of the collected tap water samples.

The rule replaced the previous standard of 50 ppb, measured at the entry point to the distribution system. The rule established a maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG) of zero for lead in drinking water and a treatment technique to reduce corrosion of lead and copper within the distribution system.

Action Level (AL): The action level is a concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a public water system must follow. The lead action level is 0.015 mg/L.

The 1991 Rule The rule established a maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG) of zero for lead in drinking water and a treatment technique to reduce corrosion of lead and copper within the distribution system.

(2) Each first draw tap sample for lead and copper must be one liter in volume and have stood motionless in the plumbing system of each sampling site for at least six hours. Bottles used to collect first draw samples must be wide-mouth one-liter sample bottles.

EPA's new Lead and Copper Rule better protects children and communities from the risks of lead exposure by better protecting children at schools and child care facilities, getting the lead out of our nation's drinking water, and empowering communities through information.
