A Foot Function Index (FFI) was developed to measure the impact of foot pathology on function in terms of pain, disability and activity restriction. The FFI is a self-administered index consisting of 23 items divided into 3 sub-scales. Both total and sub-scale scores are produced.

Response options/scale. The FFI-R uses a 4-point Likert scale from 1 (“no pain,” “no stiffness,” “no difficulty,” and “none of the time”) to 4 (“severe pain,” “severe stiffness,” “severe difficulty,” “all of the time,” and “most of the time”). A score of 5 can be selected for items that are not applicable.

The foot is subdivided into the rearfoot, midfoot, and forefoot. It functions as a rigid structure for weight bearing and it can also function as a flexible structure to conform to uneven terrain.

All intrinsic muscles of the foot originate and insert within it. They have two main actions. The first is to stabilise the foot and support the arches to maintain foot structure. The second is to aid the actions of the muscles of the lower leg to produce fine movements of the toes.

The calculation is: (total score/ 230) x 100 =___%. For the original visual analog scale, the total score is reported as the sum of the scores of answers provided on the self- report instrument divided by a maximum score of 207 and multiplied by 100.

In total, the ankle allows the foot to move in six different ways: dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, inversion, eversion, and medial and lateral rotation. Flexion and extension at the ankle are referred to as dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, respectively (Figure 2).
