Applicants to the Marines who are over the weight limits need a waiver from approved by the Marine Corps Recruiting Region Commanding General, in order to enlist in the delayed entry program (DEP).

A Marine is expected to satisfy fitness requirements in which he or she must be able to maintain a body mass that is 25% less than when they entered service. Weight requirements for Marines are between 160 and 170 pounds on average.

(a) The MCBCMAP is comprised of two distinct programs that monitor and evaluate the appearance of Marines while providing assistance through focused supervision in order to ensure compliance with established body composition and military appearance standards.

Marines who exceed the body-fat allowance are enrolled in the Body Composition Program. If the Marine fails to lose the required weight and body fat required to meet standards while enrolled in the Body Composition Program, this may result in an involuntary discharge.

The maximum body fat percentages Marines at each age group can have are listed below: Male Marines must be within the 18%-21% body fat range, depending on age. Female Marines must be within the 26%-29% body fat range, depending on age.

Factors for Unsatisfactory Performance: A Marine who shows a 10% increase in weight, or 2% Body Fat increase, or SNM is reduced in rank at a Competency Review Board for failure to maintain height/weight standards.

If a Marine does not show progress while on the program, reenlistment and promotion opportunities can be denied. To maintain fairness and impartiality, Marines assigned to the MAP have the right to appeal their status to the next higher officer in the CoC.
