Responsible Battery Recycling Act of 2022. The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act of 2006 requires every retailer, as defined, to have in place a system for the acceptance and collection of used rechargeable batteries for reuse, recycling, or proper disposal.

The intended objective of the Act was a reduction of heavy metals in municipal waste and in streams and ground water that resulted from the disposal of: Mercury in single-use (primary cell) batteries. Toxic metal content such as lead from lead-acid batteries and the cadmium in rechargeable batteries, namely Ni-Cads.

The Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act - Public Law 104-142. An Act: Phase out the use of mercury-containing batteries and provide for the recycling of nickel cadmium, small sealed lead-acid batteries, and certain others.

The Batteries Act prohibits the placing on the market of batteries containing more than 0.0005 percent of mercury by weight. It is also prohibited to place on the market portable batteries containing more than 0.002 percent of cadmium by weight.

To phase out the use of mercury in batteries and provide for the efficient and cost-effective collection and recycling or proper disposal of used nickel cadmium batteries, small sealed lead-acid batteries, and certain other batteries, and for other purposes.

(1) These rules may be called the Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001. (2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
