INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION (IATA)

If you have a new airline and you need an IATA code, it all starts with an application form. You can access that by signing up for a user account within the customer portal. Note that applying for the code will cost $5,700. There are lower fees for IATA members, but that membership is pricey too.

IATA code assigned to the airport by IATA consists of 3 letters and created through the airport and city names. Codes are mostly generated with the letters chosen from a city's name. 2-character codes of airports are given in 1930 for the first time. Then three-character codes started to be used.

Your bag tag number is on your baggage claim ticket and is either 10 digits (all numbers) or 8 characters (letters and numbers).

Every airport in the world has its own unique three-letter IATA code. These codes help us to communicate quickly and efficiently when we refer to airports and airlines. You can find the 3-letter IATA airport code on your e-ticket next to the full name of the airport, for example, "Kuala Lumpur KUL".

There's also a 10-digit number known as the IATA license plate code. The first digit is the Baggage Tag Issuer Code, the next three digits identify the carrier airline, followed by a rolling number that resets when it gets to the last digit.
