Tip pooling is when a business collects and redistributes a portion or all of the tip money to employees. Essentially, the business collects some or all of the tips from employees and puts them into one large “pool.” Then, the business divides the tips among the group of employees.

To split servers' tips based on hours worked, add up the total amount of tips and then divide that figure by the total hours worked. Then, multiply THAT figure by the hours an individual server worked.

One of the main cons of tip pooling is that high performers take home less than they would normally. They may have worked hard to perfect their skills and give their customers stellar service, but they still make the same amount in tips as another server who doesn't put forth the same effort.

To split tips based on hours worked, add up the total amount of tips and then divide that number by the total hours worked by all employees. Next, multiply the resulting figure by the hours an individual employee worked.

Tip pooling is when a portion or all of the tip money from the night is collected and redistributed evenly or by a set percentage — instead of each individual server keeping the tips they earned individually.

Set percentages. Real world example: Servers keep 70% of their tips and contribute 30% to a pool. Bartenders might get 50% of the pool, hostesses get 20%, bussers get 10%, dishwashers get 10%, and so on.

Pros Of Tip Pooling With tip pooling, your employees quickly realize that they are all in it together. As a result, teamwork and group cohesion improve because everyone knows a good customer experience usually results in a higher tip and more money in their pocket at the end of the day.

Example: A restaurant requires all its waiters to contribute 10% of their tips to a tip pool. The tips in the tip pool are split between the busboys/bussers, hosts, and dishwashers. This arrangement is legal under California tip law.
