Classroom expectations are clearly defined explanations of behavioral and classroom performance that help create a consistent and safe learning environment.

They are called "The 5 Ps," and are: Prompt, Prepared, Productive, Polite, and Position.

Three behavioral expectations you can set in your classroom from the start are when students should be seated, how to show respect to their classmates and teachers, and how to be attentive. Read on for a few tips on how to implement these guidelines and what the benefits will look like.

Rule – one of a set of explicit or understood regulations or principles governing conduct within a particular activity or sphere. Standard – a level of quality or attainment.

Standards are set by grade. They begin in kindergarten and continue through to requirements for high school graduation. For example, a first-grade standard might require students to learn to retell stories and understand their key messages.

Standards-based classrooms do things a little differently. In this classroom, teachers must first figure out what skills students must master, and design their lessons and assessments to meet those goals. Assessment is ongoing, with teachers providing regular feedback about each student's progress.

Students are guided by models of work that meet the standard. Students are guided to independence. Students see consistent expectations across subject areas. Students see their teachers as the "guide on the side."

4 The five standards are: higher-order thinking, depth of knowledge, connectedness to the world beyond the classroom, substantive conversation, and social support for student achievement (see fig. 1.).
