A water backflow prevention device is a device that works to protect potable water from contamination or pollution due to backflow. In layman's terms, it's essentially a device that stops water from flowing backward in your pipes.

Backwater sanitary valves (also known as "check valves" or "backwater valves") are also often referred to as "backflow preventers" They are intended to prevent backflow of sewage on the sanitary sewer line during a flood or sewer blockage, and have no connection with potable water.

As the name implies, a backflow preventer is a mechanical device that is installed in a plumbing system to prevent contaminated water from flowing backwards into the system.

The three classes of backflow risk are low, medium or high as per AS/NZS 3500.1:2015. Low Risk – where the water supply system poses a nuisance but does not endanger health or cause injury. Medium Risk – where the water supply system could endanger health. High Risk – where the water supply system could cause death.

The Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) and the Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly (RPZA) are the most used backflow preventers for fire protection systems, but I will discuss all the most common backflow preventers used in plumbing systems.

If your backflow preventer fails the test, it needs to be cleaned or repaired and in some cases it may need to be completely replaced and a successful re-test performed. These backflow devices fail at a rate of 10-15% after one year.

Rusted check valves – Similar to debris, rust from inside the device or piping can cause the mechanical components to seize or stop working correctly. If the device has metal components and fails its test, the parts often have to be replaced. If the components are too sized the whole device would have to be replaced.

The Manager shall inspect and approve all installations of the required backflow prevention devices. The costs for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a backflow prevention device shall be the responsibility and sole expense of the consumer. The consumer shall the backflow prevention device.
