The Virginia Construction Code requires backflow prevention assemblies to be tested by a certified tester.

The Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) and the Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly (RPZA) are the most used backflow preventers for fire protection systems, but I will discuss all the most common backflow preventers used in plumbing systems.

To ensure the device is functioning properly, a certified backflow tester must test all backflow prevention devices annually.

The backflow devices are considered “non-testable” and the only required maintenance is rebuild or replacement of the device once every five years.

If your backflow preventer fails the test, it needs to be cleaned or repaired and in some cases it may need to be completely replaced and a successful re-test performed. These backflow devices fail at a rate of 10-15% after one year.

Backwater sanitary valves (also known as "check valves" or "backwater valves") are also often referred to as "backflow preventers" They are intended to prevent backflow of sewage on the sanitary sewer line during a flood or sewer blockage, and have no connection with potable water.

The three classes of backflow risk are low, medium or high as per AS/NZS 3500.1:2015. Low Risk – where the water supply system poses a nuisance but does not endanger health or cause injury. Medium Risk – where the water supply system could endanger health. High Risk – where the water supply system could cause death.

Backflow prevention devices need to be inspected annually, due the same month they were initially installed.

The life expectancy of a backflow preventer is five to 10 years.

A water backflow prevention device is a device that works to protect potable water from contamination or pollution due to backflow. In layman's terms, it's essentially a device that stops water from flowing backward in your pipes.
