The lspv command displays the information about the physical volume if the specific physical volume name is specified. If you do not add flags to the lspv command, by default all the available physical volumes are printed along with the following information: Physical disk name. Physical volume identifiers (PVIDs).

You can get LV information by using the lvdisplay command. If you have any logical volumes they will appear as such as well as additional information about that volume such as the path, logical volume name, volume group name, size, etc.

In most cases, the current maximum volumes value will match the default maximum physical volume value. If the maximum physical values do not match, the volume group type can be determined by using other volume group properties, such as maximum logical volumes.

For example, lsvg –l lists all the logical volumes (LVs) -- not just the ones with file system mount points. So if you have LVs for a dump device or paging space or JFS logs, you must exclude them, perhaps with the grep command. Using lsvgfs is much easier.

For example, to make a VG, the command is mkvg; to list information about an LV, the command is lslv; and to change a file system, the command is chfs. Let us examine some examples of commands to list LVM information.

The lslv command displays the characteristics and status of the LogicalVolume or lists the logical volume allocation map for the physical partitions on the PhysicalVolume. The logical volume can be a name or identifier.

Use the vgdisplay command to verify whether the LVM configuration in memory has problems. If the LVM configuration is working properly, there are no error messages, and the display shows the following: The status is available (or available/exclusive for Serviceguard volume groups).
