Article Number. 000007581. Permit Imprints are a way to pay for business (also known as discount or bulk) postage. It is one of three business mail payment options, the other two being meters and precanceled stamps. Permit imprints are the only postage option that can ONLY be used for business mailing.

While nonprofit letters mail for an average of 11-12 cents each, nonprofit mail EDDM letters and postcards mail for 8 cents each for DDU entry or 8.9 cents each for Sectional Facility Entry.

The NPA number lets mail carriers know that the entity on your envelope is a non-profit organization authorized to mail a piece at a lower postage rate.

A mailing permit is permission to use a certain postage payment method for commercial mailings. Instructions for applying for a mailing permit are included under each method of payment. There is no fee to apply for a permit to mail with precanceled stamps or a postage meter.

You may be aware that special nonprofit prices are available for some Periodicals and USPS Marketing Mail mailers, but you may not know who is eligible for those privileges. Nonprofit postage is lower than regular prices, but not everyone can qualify.

The words BUSINESS REPLY MAIL are required above the address in capital (upper case) letters 3/16" minimum height. Immediately below this, the words FIRST-CLASS MAIL PERMIT NO. followed by the permit number and the name of the issuing Post Office (city and state) in capital letters.
