The purpose of performing interpreter's evaluations is to assess the interpreter's language proficiency, interpreting skills and professionalism to protect the client and the public from poor quality services.

Passing the BEI exam is required in order to become a certified ASL interpreter in Texas. There are various levels and types of certificates offered through the BEI. Feel free to peruse the links below to learn more about the various certificates offered, review the test study materials, and sign up for a test itself.

Assess the credentials In particular, check the interpreter's age, educational and work histories, past interpretation events, and any test scores the interpreter has obtained.

A high level of bilingualism is the most basic of the qualifications of a competent interpreter, but by itself does not ensure the ability to interpret. A bilingual employee may provide direct services in both languages but, without additional training, is not qualified to serve as an interpreter.

This term is much less precise in its meaning than “certified interpreter.” A “qualified interpreter” is someone who is considered competent to interpret in at least two languages after meeting a set of standards or criteria.

You need to have a GED diploma or the equivalent. You need to be proficient in both English and Spanish, as well as in the cultural nuances of both languages. You need to complete a minimum of 40 hours of medical interpreter training. Texas does not have a state certification for medical interpreters.

Minimum Qualifications to Become an Interpreter Hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrate bilingualism and literacy through language proficiency testing. Hold a certificate for professional interpreter training (at least 40 hours of training).

Becoming a certified interpreter is a 2-step process: Pass the Test of English Proficiency. Pass the BEI Performance Test (Basic, Advanced or Master)
