soldier. / (ˈsəʊldʒə) / noun. a person who serves or has served in an army.

“Sergeant Major.” If you're trying to address a specific NCO among other NCOs, you address them by “Sergeant” and their last name (giving the exceptions above, of course). Marine NCOs are addressed by their rank (“Sergeant”, “Staff Sergeant”, “Gunnery Sergeant”, etc.).

Approaching Noncommissioned Officer If a group of Soldiers are in a formation and an NCO approaches, the first Soldier to recognize the NCO comes to the position of attention, and commands, “At Ease” and ALL Soldiers will render the appropriate greeting. In all situations, the NCO may give the directive to “Carry On”.

PRAECIPERE MILITI, the motto of the Institute, is Latin for "Teaching The Soldier.” This insignia was first approved on 23 July 1973 for the U.S. Army Institute of Administration (a subordinate element of the U.S. Army Administrative Schools Center).

The 7th Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy (7th Army NCOA) is the U.S. Army's oldest NCO Academy. It is the only academy serving the European and AFRICOM Theater and employing mobile training teams (MTTs) throughout Europe and Africa.

Army regulations call for addressing all personnel with the rank of general as 'General (last name)' regardless of the number of stars. Likewise, both colonels and lieutenant colonels are addressed as 'Colonel (last name)' and first and second lieutenants as 'Lieutenant (last name).

When outdoors and approached by an NCO, you greet the NCO by saying, “Good morning, Sergeant,” for example. The first person who sees an officer enter a dining facility gives the order “At ease,” unless a more senior officer is already present. Many units also extend this courtesy to senior NCOs.

All NCOs will be addressed as “Sergeant” with the exception of the First Sergeant and Sergeant Major. They will be addressed by their title. Another ancient military custom dictates that you should always walk or sit to the left of your seniors.
