The FFI-R uses a 4-point Likert scale from 1 (“no pain,” “no stiffness,” “no difficulty,” and “none of the time”) to 4 (“severe pain,” “severe stiffness,” “severe difficulty,” “all of the time,” and “most of the time”).

The foot is subdivided into the rearfoot, midfoot, and forefoot. It functions as a rigid structure for weight bearing and it can also function as a flexible structure to conform to uneven terrain.

For the total score, the minimum score is 0% (no pain or difficulty), and maximum score is 100% (worst pain and extreme difficulty requiring assistance). Alternative scoring method: The total FFI equals the average of the 3 subscale scores. Pain, disability, and activity limitation subscale scores range from 0 to 100.

Arch index values were calculated by dividing the midfoot area by the total footprint area: arch index=middle / (anterior+middle+posterior). Foot type was classified based on the arch index value.

A Foot Function Index (FFI) was developed to measure the impact of foot pathology on function in terms of pain, disability and activity restriction. The FFI is a self-administered index consisting of 23 items divided into 3 sub-scales. Both total and sub-scale scores are produced.

The Foot Function Index (FFI) is a self-report, foot-specific instrument measuring pain and disability and has been widely used to measure foot health for over twenty years. A revised FFI (FFI-R) was developed in response to criticism of the FFI.
