rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). R. parkeri rickettsiosis and RMSF have similar signs and symptoms, including fever, headache, and rash, but also typically include the appearance of an inoculation eschar (seen at right) at the site of tick attachment.

Long-term Health Problems Some patients who recover from severe RMSF may be left with permanent damage, including amputation of arms, legs, fingers, or toes (from damage to blood vessels in these areas); hearing loss; paralysis; or mental disability.

Both illnesses are spread by ticks, but different bacteria are to blame: Lyme disease is spread via Borrelia bacteria, including Borrelia burgdorferi. RMSF infections are caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, an entirely different type of bacterium [9]

Rickettsial infections can affect many organs, including the central nervous system (CNS) [4]. The most common neurological manifestations reported in rickettsial infections include meningitis, encephalitis, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis [5].

Rickettsial Diseases (Including Spotted Fever & Typhus Fever Rickettsioses, Scrub Typhus, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichioses)

When left untreated, the bacteria can cause damage to blood vessels throughout the body leading to organ and tissue damage. RMSF can be fatal, even in previously healthy people. If not treated correctly, death can often occur within eight days of symptoms starting.

Long-term Effects of RMSF rickettsii infects the endothelial cells that line the blood vessels causing vasculitis. As infection continues, bleeding or clotting in the brain or other vital organs may occur.
