Carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand or “CBOD5” means an index of the amount of oxygen that will be consumed by the decomposition of organic matter in sewage. The CBOD5 test is one of the commonly used indicators of waste strength.

Carbonaceous BOD (CBOD5 ) more closely represents oxygen demand associated with biodegradation of organic constituents of a wastewater than does BOD5 and therefore should be used as a basis for sizing and evaluating the performance of aerobic treatment processes.

BOD results are based on DO depletion from both carbonaceous and nitrogenous actors in a wastewater sample. CBOD measures DO depletion from only carbonaceous sources. Regulators may assign either BOD or CBOD, or both, to wastewater treatment facilities.

Carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD) is the same method as BOD, but the nitrifying bacteria in the sample are inhibited. Nitrifying bacteria consume nitrogenous materials (compounds with reduced forms of nitrogen) and add to the oxygen demand of the wastewater.

BOD includes the readily biodegradable organic carbon (carbonaceous or cBOD) and occasionally ammonia (nitrogenous or nBOD). cBOD is the primary driver of BOD and includes soluble, particulate, and colloidal organic carbon compounds. COD is the amount of oxygen required for the chemical oxidation of compounds in water.

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is the amount of oxygen microorganisms require to break down organic materials. In contrast, chemical oxygen demand (COD) is the amount of oxygen required to break down the organic material via oxidation. Read: Biological Oxygen Demand. Let us look at the differences between BOD and COD.

BOD results are based on DO depletion from both carbonaceous and nitrogenous actors in a wastewater sample. CBOD measures DO depletion from only carbonaceous sources. Regulators may assign either BOD or CBOD, or both, to wastewater treatment facilities.

Carbonaceous BOD (CBOD) can be determined by the addition of nitrification inhibitor. A test for CBOD is recommended for biologically-treated effluents, samples with bacterial seed, samples with biologically treated effluents and river water.
