Anaesthesia means "loss of sensation". Medicines that cause anaesthesia are called anaesthetics. Anaesthetics are used during tests and surgical operations to numb sensation in certain areas of the body or induce sleep. This prevents pain and discomfort, and enables a wide range of medical procedures to be carried out.

How to become an anaesthetist. After medical school, you'll join the paid two-year foundation programme where you'll work in six placements in different settings. After your foundation programme, you can apply for paid specialty training to become an anaesthetist which will take a minimum of 7 or 8 years.

To apply for a post as a student anaesthesia associate, you'll need to be either: an experienced registered health care professional e.g. a nurse or operating department practitioner with at least three years' full-time, post-qualification work experience and evidence of recent academic study.

The core training (basic level training) will normally comprise of 30 months anaesthesia and 6 months ICM.

To become an anaesthetist, you'll need to complete: a 5-year degree in medicine that is recognised by the General Medical Council. a 2-year foundation programme of general training. up to 8 years of specialist training.
