For suspected infections in other parts of the body, washings/aspirates, swabs of the infected area, fluids and/or tissue samples (biopsy) may be collected for testing. Testing may include: AFB smear a microscopic examination of a specimen that has been stained to detect acid-fast bacteria, such as NTM organisms.

Drug susceptibility testing should be done when the patient is first found to have a positive culture. This is very important because patients who are treated with drugs to which their TB is resistant will not be cured, and using the wrong drugs can lead to further drug resistance.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is not considered gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria. However, the bacterium may weakly stain gram-positive when gram-stained.

Drug susceptibility testing means testing to find out if a person has got drug resistant TB. That means finding out which drugs the TB bacteria in their body are sensitive to.

Diagnosis of Mycobacterium abscessusDiagnosis is made by growing this bacterium in the laboratory from a sample of the pus or biopsy of the infected area. When the infection is severe, the bacterium can be found in the blood and isolated from a blood sample.

Mycobacterium abscessus is a bacterium distantly related to the ones that cause tuberculosis and leprosy. It is part of a group known as rapidly growing mycobacteria and is found in water, soil, and dust. It has been known to contaminate medications and products, including medical devices.

Drug susceptible TB is the opposite. If someone is infected with TB bacteria that are fully susceptible, it means that all of the TB drugs will be effective so long as they are taken properly. It still means that several drugs need to be taken together to provide effective TB treatment.

Biopsy of the skin, involved lymph nodes, and lung can be used to diagnose atypical mycobacteria. The tissue obtained can be used for cultures of the tissue and for histopathologic examination.

Mycobacterial infections are notoriously difficult to treat. The organisms are hardy due to their cell wall, which is neither truly Gram negative nor positive.

When performed properly, this method allows a quantitation of the proportion of mutants resistant to a drug and can detect the 1% proportion of drug- resistant mutants above which therapeutic failure is likely. M. tuberculosis complex are tested by this method with the following drugs: .
