There are a lot of reasons why the Merchant Navy is a career like no other. Some of them include the opportunity to work while you travel across the globe, getting high pay packages, obtaining tax exemptions, getting exposure to varied cultures, meeting people from different nationalities, and much more.

Merchant Navy and Indian Navy are completely different from each other as the former involves commercial shipping while the latter deals with national security at sea. Both of these forces differ in terms of ranks, salary, joining criteria, pensions, and more.

The Merchant Navy is the name given to the international commercial shipping industry. It is made up of several shipping companies who recruit civilians as their seafarers. Companies vary greatly in the size of ship, types of ship and areas of the world where they operate.

Despite sharing the word 'Navy' in their titles, the difference between the Royal and Merchant Navies was that sailors in the latter were classed as civilians.

The title 'Merchant Navy' was granted by King George V after the First World War to recognise the contribution made by merchant sailors. Britain's merchant fleet was the largest in the world during both world wars. In 1939, a third of the world's merchant ships were British, and there were some 200,000 sailors.

You can start your career as a Merchant Navy officer-cadet (deck) on an industry sponsored foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree, at a maritime college or university. Courses usually include onboard practical training. Subjects offered include: nautical science.

There is no central organisation, and no central records, unlike the Armed Forces. You are an employee of the individual company. The term Merchant Navy originally was a British thing, but over the years it has been adopted around the world.

Merchant Navy represents commercial marine services that consist of a fleet of ships that are used specifically for the purpose of commercial shipping, whereas Indian Navy refers to nations' maritime military wing where the vessels/ships are solely for the purpose of national security.
