The Educational Choice Scholarship (EdChoice) Program provides students from designated public schools the opportunity to attend participating private schools. The program also provides low-income students who are entering kindergarten through 12th grade scholarship opportunities.

For the 2022–23 school year, students are eligible if they are from families with income no more than 250 percent of the federal poverty level ($69,375 for a family of four in 2022–23). Those at or below this income level are eligible for maximum vouchers when they first apply and renew their vouchers.

The Traditional EdChoice Scholarship provides vouchers for students attending or going into a Designated Public School and the EdChoice Expansion Scholarship provides vouchers for students with household income levels at 250% or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Backpack bill: An Ohio House bill would allow more students to obtain vouchers to pay for private school and home school tuition: up to $5,500 for students in grades K-8 and $7,500 for grades 9-12.

The EdChoice Expansion Program is an income-based program. It provides students in grades K – 12 the opportunity to attend a private school for little or no cost whose families meet the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

EdChoice Scholarship, available since 2005 and expanded in 2013, provides students from designated public schools the opportunity to attend participating chartered nonpublic schools. The program expansion provides low income students the same opportunity.

The bill eliminates the EdChoice and Cleveland Scholarship Program beginning in FY 2025, but allows students already receiving EdChoice or Cleveland scholarships under current law to participate in the Backpack Scholarship Program.
