Prior to drilling a ground water well in Colorado, you must have a permit from the Colorado Division of Water Resources, also known as the State Engineer's Office. Most private domestic wells in Colorado are “exempt” from administration in the priority system and do not require augmentation.

In order to administer the thousands of wells in Colorado, the State Engineer issues and maintains permits that limit the use of each well pursuant to the Colorado Revised Statutes. By law, every new or replacement well in the state that diverts groundwater must have a well permit.

Household-use-only wells are typically on properties that are less than 35 acres in size. With this type of well, the water can only be used inside the home. No lawn watering, garden watering, or other outside use is permitted. Domestic use wells apply to more than 35 acres in size properties.

Aquifers may be as shallow as a few feet, or as deep as thousands of feet below the ground surface. Wells in mountainous areas of the Front Range typically average 350 feet deep; while in eastern Colorado they range from 40 to 1000 feet deep.

The Arapahoe aquifer encompasses approximately 4,700-square miles and ranges in thickness from zero to 400 feet. Its maximum depth is approximately 1,700 feet. The aquifer consists of an interbedded sequence of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale.

The drilling depth to water and bedrock and the well's diameter are the most significant cost factors. The average well is drilled 100 to 300 feet deep, while some shallow wells only go down to 25 feet to reach groundwater.

Thicknesses average about 250 to 350 feet in the northern counties and 50 to 150 feet in the counties south of the Arkansas River.

Dug wells have a large diameter, are shallow (approximately 10 to 30 feet deep) and are not cased continuously. Driven wells are constructed by driving pipe into the ground. Driven wells are cased continuously and shallow (approximately 30 to 50 feet deep).
