A child's clarity of vision (visual acuity) has usually developed to 20/20 by the time the child reaches six months of age. At this time, babies achieve fairly precise eye movement control. At ages eight to 12 months, babies are judging distances well.

Children routinely undergo vision screening by the pediatrician or school in order to detect issues that might not otherwise come to light. A failed vision screening may indicate something as trivial as poor focusing effort by the child, to something as serious as a tumor of the eye.

CHDP is a program that provides well-child check-ups to children enrolled in Medi-Cal as well as those children not qualified for Medi-Cal but determined income-eligible. ... CHDP exams help parents and families learn about possible risks to infants, children and youth at specific ages, and what to do to avoid them.

Starting at 1 to 2 years. Photo screening devices can be used to start detecting potential eyes problems. At 3 to 4 years. Eyes and vision should be checked for any abnormalities that may cause problems with later development.

Vision screenings provide less than 4% of the information generated during a comprehensive eye exam and miss up to 75% of children with vision problems.

Many schools conduct vision screenings as a service to try to identify vision problems that may affect their students' academic performance but are they reliable? The simple answer is, no. These vision screenings are very limited, and are NOT a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination performed by an eye doctor.

Vision screening is a very important way to identify vision problems. During an exam, the doctor looks for eye disease and checks to see if the eyes are working properly. Children with a family history of childhood vision problems are more likely to have eye problems.

The USPSTF recommends vision screening for all children at least once between the ages of 3 and 5 years, to detect the presence of amblyopia or its risk factors.

Threshold screening involves beginning at the top of an eye chart and moving down the chart until the child or adult misses 3 of 5 optotypes. Critical line screening is using only the line which the child or adult should correctly identify 3 of 5 optotypes according to age.

Screening is typically done at 10 feet. Opposite eye must be fully covered. Must be able to identify the majority of the 20/32 line (or 20/30 in Snellen chart) with each eye. Use LEA symbols, HOTV letters for children who do not know their letters.
