To take your vehicle on the Dunes you must have all current permits including: ORV Permit, ORV Trails Permit, and Recreation Passport; a 4-wheel drive vehicle, tires with a max of 15PSI, and a safety flag.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes is located along Lake Michigan's sweeping shoreline between Muskegon and Ludington. Our lofty, 2,000-acre sand mountain separates miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and the 690-acre Silver Lake.

Vouchers are free to park visitors and are distributed from the Off-Road Vehicle Welcome Center located at the corner of Fox and Ridge Roads, about 1/4 mile east of the ORV Area entrance.

Despite the permit changes, the old system will still be accepted: an individual ORV permit, which cost $26.25, plus the ORV trail permit, which costs $10. Silver Lake State Park covers 2,936 acres in Oceana County and is located four miles west of Mears.

Do I need a permit to be on the Dunes in a motor vehicle? Yes. An ORV Permit and an ORV Trails Permit are required, along with a Recreation Passport. And, to drive, you must be over 16 with a valid driver's license.

Silver Lake State Park is home to 2,000 acres of sand dunes, including a 450-acre ORV scramble area, that has been a family-fun destination for generations.

Safety is a significant issue at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. All vehicles entering the Dunes must have mounted to their front bumper a 10-foot mast holding an international orange flag. With the rolling terrain, spotting a flag coming over a hill can avert collisions.
