  2. Begin by entering the 'Sight #' in the appropriate box. This number helps you keep track of the sequential sights you take during your navigation process.
  3. In the 'Star' section, list the name of the star you are observing. This is where you will provide clear identification of the celestial object.
  4. Input the 'DR Latitude' and 'DR Longitude'. Both should include the integral degree format, e.g., 'N 40°' or 'W 075°'. This data is critical for determining your position relative to the observed star.
  5. Record the 'Date' of your observation and ensure it aligns with Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Use resources to convert your local time to GMT as needed.
  6. Fill in the 'UT' (Universal Time) based on the time you recorded your sighting. Make sure this reflects accurate time down to seconds.
  7. In the 'Hs' section, enter the height of the sextant measurement. This is the initial angle reading of the star during observation.
  8. Add any necessary corrections including 'Index Error' and 'Dip'. Utilize the appropriate correction tables as referenced in the form.
  9. For calculations that require 'GHA' (Greenwich Hour Angle), refer to The Nautical Almanac to obtain the correct figures based on your date and time of observation.
  10. Complete the form by filling out the remaining fields such as 'Hc', 'Zn', and 'Intercept'. Each section will require careful entry based on your sighting data and prior calculations.

They are designed to facilitate the practice of celestial navigation at sea. The tables are primarily used with the intercept method of sight reduction by entering arguments of latitude, declination and local hour angle and obtaining tabulated altitudes and azimuth angles.

The Sight Reduction Tables for Air Navigation (Pub 249) consist of three volumes of comprehensive tables of altitude and azimuth designed for the rapid reduction of astronomical sights in the air.

This volume (Volume 2), for latitudes 0°–40°, and Volume 3 for latitudes 39°–89°, provide for sights of the Sun, Moon, and planets; these tables are permanent.

249: Fast and easy extraction of the Hc and true azimuth, and the ease of sight planning. Another advantage is that only one correction is applied to the fix. The disadvantages of Vol. 1 is the limited stars that are listed and the fact that it must be replaced every five to eight years.

These seven stars represent the best selection for observation at any given position and time, and provide the data for presetting instruments before observation and for sight reduction afterwards.

249 was designed for air navigation, it is also used extensively for marine navigation.

The 249 tables are restricted to Bodies with Declinations below 29° and have the data rounded to the whole degree. The 229 tables have no restriction on Declination and the data is carried to one decimal place.
