Georgia has a long history as a leader in promoting early learning and development outcomes for children. Georgia introduced its latest set of high-quality, research-based early learning standards for children birth to age five called the Georgia Early Learning and Development Standards (GELDS).

Standards and Assessment. Early learning and development standards, sometimes called early learning guidelines, are the heart of an early childhood development system. Based on scientific research, they provide guideposts of what children should know and be able to do at various age ranges.

Early Learning and Development Standards means a set of expectations, guidelines, or developmental milestones that describe what all children from birth until kindergarten entry should know and be able to do and their disposition toward learning.

STRAND: Health and Well-Being. Standard PD1: The child will practice healthy and safe habits. PDM1.4a. Stays awake and alert during the day except during voluntary nap time.

The standards have five domains of learning that are organized into strands, standards and age-appropriate indicators physical development and motor skills; social and emotional development; approaches to play and learning; communication, language and literacy; and cognitive development and general knowledge.
