Juan de la Cosa Map (1500) The Juan de la Cosa, a Spanish cartographer, explorer and conquistador, born in Santoña in the northern autonomous region of Cantabria, made several maps of which the only survivor is the Mappa Mundi of 1500. It is the first known European cartographic representation of the Americas.

Columbus Sails West. On the morning of Oct. 12, 1492, the master navigator Christopher Columbus stepped ashore on an island in the Americas. The arrival of his ships in the Western Hemisphere was one of the pivotal events in world history.

The first map of Europe, published in 1554 by Gerard Mercator, was the origin of a long genealogy of maps using ancient and contemporary sources.

The oldest surviving map that unambiguously shows locations in the New World is a chart drawn by Juan de la Cosa (Spain) in 1500. Juan de la Cosa was a veteran navigator and the captain/owner of the Santa María, one of the three ships that sailed with Christopher Columbus in 1492.

Waldseemüller's map supported Vespucci's revolutionary concept by portraying the New World as a separate continent, which until then was unknown to the Europeans. It was the first map, printed or manuscript, to depict clearly a separate Western Hemisphere, with the Pacific as a separate ocean.
