Dental x-rays are typically needed each year, or every other visit if you maintain regular cleanings with our Houston general dentist every six months.

This often depends on your medical and dental history and current condition. Some people may need X-rays as often as every six months; others with no recent dental or gum disease and who visit their dentist regularly may get X-rays only every couple of years.

What Is an Anode? The anode is a small metal disc (usually tungsten or copper) that receives the electron beam from the cathode and emits it as X-ray. The anode is positioned at an angle that will direct the X-ray beam into the arc of the C, where the subject of your scan will be positioned.

Most x-ray tube anodes are made of tungsten (the target material). Tungsten has a high atomic number (Z=74) and a high melting point of 3370°C with a correspondingly low rate of evaporation.

The RSO will determine compliance with rules and regulations, license conditions and the conditions of project approval specified by the radiation safety committee. The RSO will monitor and maintain absolute control of the use, storage or disposal of radioactive material.

Most x-ray tube anodes are made of tungsten (the target material). Tungsten has a high atomic number (Z=74) and a high melting point of 3370°C with a correspondingly low rate of evaporation.

There are three levels of RSOs—Level 1, 2 and 3. The first two levels require either a doctor in nuclear medicine or someone trained and with the practical experience to deal with small-time radiation exercises.

The person responsible for implementing the radiation protection program is called the Radiation Safety Officer, or RSO. This individual may also be called the Radiation Protection Officer (RPO). The RSO needs independent authority to stop operations that he or she considers unsafe.

General guidelines. For the most part, a general dentist will recommend x-rays once a year. Most patients, whether children or adults, will undergo two routine check-up appointments a year. Typically, they are spread out so that they fall every six months.

The role of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is to prevent unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation and maintain necessary exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
